Plant Type: Grasses

Deciduous clumping grass desired for its heavy foliage and tall silvery plumes. Reaching heights of 10′ to 14′ it tends to be the largest of the Miscanthus species. Flowers appear in August or September. Prefers full sun, fertile, moist and well drained soils.

Giant Chinese Silver, Miscanthus ‘Giganteus’, is a large perennial grass (it can grow up to 13 feet in height) and lends a tropical effect to any landscape. The flowers start as red clusters, mature to white and then dry and persist into winter. In cold, snowy climates, it is a giant in the garden and provides year-round interest and remains standing through heavy snowfalls. Giant Chinese Silver is particularly effective when used as a specimen in a park or zoo, or use as a border, screen, hedge, background plant, massing, or by the water. Miscanthus is an environmentally friendly plant. Its large root system captures nutrients, and stems provide wildlife cover. For grasses like Miscanthus you should not skimp on sun. They may flop or not bloom very well if planted in too much shade. Provide a growing area in full sun or part shade and with moist soil.
